$90 MILLION WATER RECYCLING SYSTEM LAUNCHED AT GOOGONG

Water recycling technology worth more than $90 million was launched by Minister for Defence Materiel and Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Dr Mike Kelly, and Queanbeyan Mayor, Cnr Tim Overall, at Googong earlier today.

The Googong Integrated Water Cycle system––the flagship of Googong’s sustainability initiatives––will recycle more than half of the water used at Googong and enable the township’s 16,000 residents to use less water than 7,000 residents would in an average Australian community.

It uses state-of-the-art technology already proven in high profile applications––including the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic villages––to reduce potable water use at Googong by about 60 per cent and enable over half of its wastewater to be recycled.

Googong Project Director Mark Attiwill says the technology accords with the new township’s environmental mandate.

“It’s a great example of how to develop a solution to supply water to increasing populations without placing stress on existing scarce water resources,” he says. “This is the future of residential development.”
